FK UNS held a Seminar "Identification of Metabolites Using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS)"

On Friday (September 25, 2026), the Faculty of Medicine (FK) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) held an event titled “Identification of Metabolites Using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS).” The session, which took place in Meeting Room 3 of the Soetjipto Building at FK UNS, was attended by 45 participants. It was opened by the Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs at FK UNS, Prof. Dr. Eti Poncorini Pamungkasari, dr., M.Pd.
The objective of this event was to provide an understanding of the principles and technological advancements of Orbitrap systems, as well as the application of LC-MS in identifying metabolites within biological samples—covering both analytical approaches and the interpretation of the resulting data.
For this event, two speakers from Thermo Fisher Scientific have been invited: Romanas Chaleckis, Ph.D., Specialist in Product Management for Nominal Mass, and Ming Yi Ho, Ph.D., Senior Manager of Applications for Southeast Asia. Romanas holds a Ph.D. in Biostudies from Kyoto University and possesses over 15 years of experience in mass spectrometry—specifically in untargeted metabolomics, exposomics, and the development of LC-MS workflows. Meanwhile, Ming Yi Ho brings more than 20 years of experience in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry, with expertise in lipidomics, glycomics, quantitative proteomics, and the analysis of biomolecules.

Prof. Dono Indarto, dr., M.Biotech.St, Ph.D., AIFM, the chair of the event, expressed his hope that this initiative will enable participants—particularly master’s and doctoral students—to grasp the principles of LC-MS, learn to operate and apply this technology in their research, and gain the skills to interpret data for the identification and characterization of metabolites, especially those derived from plant samples.
Furthermore, participants will gain knowledge regarding the principles and applications of LC-MS, various types of LC-MS/LC-MS/MS instruments, the stages of metabolite identification—from separation to detection and data interpretation—as well as advancements in mass spectrometry technology. Additionally, the program provides insights into the application of these technologies within the fields of biomedicine, metabolomics, pharmaceuticals, food science, and natural product research.
