Faculty of Medicine, UNS Hosts National Competency Exam in Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine

3/9/2026

From August 7 to 9, 2026, the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) hosted the National Competency Examination for Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine, organized by the Ad Hoc Team for the National Competency Examination in Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine. This national examination aims to produce Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine specialists who possess nationally standardized competencies for the performance of their professional duties.

This edition of the national competency examination was attended by 53 participants from Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine study programs at various universities across Indonesia, including Universitas Sumatera Utara, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Universitas Andalas, Universitas Riau, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Udayana, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Universitas Hasanuddin, and Universitas Lampung.

All participants are required to have met various prerequisites to be eligible for this national competency examination. These requirements include completing all clinical rotations and the final project (thesis), passing the local examination, and being deemed eligible to take the national exam by their respective educational institutions.

Prof. Dr. Wiwien Heru Wiyono, Ph.D., Sp.P(K), Chair of the Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine College Chapter, stated that this competency examination serves as an opportunity for participants to demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired during their specialist medical training.

"This competency examination serves as a test to prove your readiness—whether you are truly qualified to become a pulmonologist, whether you are prepared to serve the community, and whether you can genuinely take responsibility for the knowledge you have gained throughout your studies," he said.

This national examination is conducted over three (3) consecutive days and involves national examiners. These examiners are faculty members from institutions that host the Specialist Medical Education Program in Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine and who hold the necessary qualifications to serve as examiners. To qualify as a national examiner, one must be a faculty member holding a consultant-level certification and have completed an apprenticeship during a previous national examination.

The first day of the national examination consists of a Computer-Based Test (CBT). During this session, participants answer 100 multiple-choice questions within a 120-minute timeframe.

On the second day, participants undergo an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) covering stations such as Thoracic Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Thoracostomy, Pathological Bronchoscopy, Pulmonary Function, Thoracic Ultrasound, and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD).

The OSCE utilizes various objects—such as equipment (e.g., spirometers, bronchoscopes, and manikins)—as well as simulated patients or goats. Examiners complete the provided assessment forms and are prohibited from communicating with (i.e., explaining concepts to or correcting) the participants during the exam.

On the third day, participants underwent the Comprehensive Oral Examination (CBD), which involved analyzing a written case study followed by a question-and-answer session with examiners. The examination comprised three stations: Interventional Pulmonology & Respiratory Emergencies/Infections; Airway Diseases & Occupational Lung Diseases; and Oncology & Immunology.

Participants are deemed to have passed the national examination if they achieve scores above the Passing Grade (NBL) across all three components: CBT, OSCE, and CBD. In this particular examination cycle, 43 participants successfully passed. Those who did not pass will be given the opportunity to retake the specific sections they failed.
