In order to monitor and evaluate the senior resident deployment program of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). On February 16-18, 2026, a team from FK UNS visited Sumba Barat Daya Regency, specifically at Reda Bolo Regional Hospital. Monitoring and evaluation were led by the Dean of FK UNS, Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K), FISR together with the Head of the PPDS Internal Medicine Study Program, Dr. Dhani Redhono, dr., Sp.P.D. KPTI. FINASM and the head of KSM Dr. Moewardi Regional General Hospital (RSUD), dr. Suwardi, Sp.B, Sp.BA (K).
The goal of this senior resident deployment is to ensure equitable access to specialist services for the community, particularly in the 3T (underdeveloped, remote, and outermost) areas.
This monitoring and evaluation activity is an implementation of the cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Dr. Moewardi Regional Hospital, and the Sumba Barat Daya Regency Government, signed on November 24, 2025, under number 1739/UN 27/06.1/07.0.0/2025. The agreement covers improving healthcare services, education, and research, particularly in specialist medical education programs.

Currently, the study programs sent to Reda Bolo Regional Hospital are Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Clinical Pathology, and Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine. The Anesthesia study program is planned to follow in April. The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FK UNS) has long implemented a senior resident deployment program. Previously, senior residents were sent to Sambas Regency, specifically Anesthesia Residents, and to Natuna Regency, including ENT-BKL Residents and Psychiatry Residents.
Upon arrival in Tambolaka, the capital of Sumba Barat Daya Regency, the team was greeted by the Regent of Sumba Barat Daya, Ratu Ngadu Bonu Wulla, S.T.; the Head of the Sumba Barat Daya Regency Health Office, Dr. Yulianus Kaleka; and the Director of Reda Bolo Regional Hospital, Dr. Elfrida Marpaung. This monitoring and evaluation activity was carried out for 3 effective days with a focus on evaluating health services at Reda Bolo Regional Hospital, evaluating academic activities, and observing the condition of accommodation facilities for senior residents.
The evaluation revealed suboptimal services and required further improvement. There were also shortages of facilities and infrastructure, including damaged X-ray diagnostic equipment, laboratory examination equipment, and frequently delayed procurement of consumables such as surgical sutures, reagents for diagnostic tests, and so on. Given these findings, procurement management at Reda Bolo Regional Hospital is needed to improve service quality.

According to Prof. Reviono, several aspects of the educational process still need to be improved so that residents can maximize the benefits of this deployment program.
"Scientific activities such as case reports, patient numbers and variations, reading journals, and updating information on new treatments are crucial for residents to accustom them to a positive academic environment," he said.
He further stated that the process of preparing residents to become specialist doctors ready to serve in various conditions is not easy.
"Especially if infrastructure is limited. So, it's important for senior residents to learn, because specialist doctors don't always work in fully equipped facilities. Residents must master how to assess patients with limited clinical data," he explained.
However, the Sumba Barat Daya Regency Government is also expected to immediately improve, as incomplete facilities and infrastructure will certainly hinder optimal health services. This issue has been discussed with the Regent, the Director of Reda Bolo Regional Hospital, and relevant officials for immediate action.
