KIKMI Conducted Monitoring and Evaluation of Preparations for the Opening of the Ophthalmology Study Program at FK UNS


 

As the public demand for specialist doctors increases and to meet the expectations of the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) to accelerate the production of specialist doctors in Indonesia, the Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) plans to open 10 new study programs for specialist and subspecialist medical education.

One of the programs to be established is the Ophthalmology study program. In this regard, on Tuesday (November 4, 2025), the Indonesian Ophthalmology College (KIKMI) conducted monitoring and evaluation of the preparation process for the opening of the FK UNS Ophthalmology study program. On this occasion, Dr. Muhammad Bayu Sasongko, Sp.M(K), M.Epid, PhD, and Dr. Tri Rahayu, dr., Sp.M(K)., FIACLE were assigned by KIKMI to directly observe the preparations at FK UNS.

In his remarks, Prof. Bayu Sasongko stated that this was an excellent opportunity to directly observe the progress of preparations for the opening of the ophthalmology study program at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret.

"Today is a good opportunity for us to see firsthand the progress of our colleagues' preparations. We in the collegium certainly have a moral obligation to oversee the establishment of this ophthalmology study program because we want to ensure that graduates from this program will have the same standards of competence and skills," he said.

The monitoring and evaluation activity, which took place in the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Negeri Surabaya Auditorium, began with a presentation of the Faculty's profile by the Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni, Dr. Ratih Dewi Yudhani, dr., M.Sc., followed by a presentation by the Head of the Ophthalmology Division, Dr. Senyum Indrakila, dr., Sp.M. Following the presentation, a discussion, question-and-answer session, and a direct inspection of the facilities at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, were held.

The Vice Dean for Academic and Research at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FK UNS), Prof. Dr. Eti Poncorini P, dr., M.Pd., stated that the opening of the Ophthalmology study program at the faculty aligns with the Ministry of Health's hope to increase the production of specialist doctors in Indonesia.

"We are also following the assignment given by the Ministry of Higher Education to open 10 PPDS study programs, consisting of 3 sub-specialty programs and 7 specialist programs. We will propose this study program, including ophthalmology," she mentioned.

"The proposal for this ophthalmology study program has a long history, but as the proposing Faculty of Medicine, we are being very careful and paying attention to the quality of the prospective study programs we will produce, especially because we are under UNS's status as a PTNBH (State Legal Entity University), so we have a significant responsibility regarding the quality of the study programs and the graduates we produce," she continued.

They then visited Dr. Moewardi Regional General Hospital (RSUD) to see firsthand the facilities and equipment of the ophthalmology department. The monitoring and evaluation team was received by the Director of Dr. Moewardi Hospital, Dr. Zulfachmi Wahab, Sp.PD-KHOM., FINASIM, and the deputy directors. They took this opportunity to discuss the hospital's readiness to accept students for the new study program.

In her remarks, Dr. Zulfachmi emphasized that Dr. Moewardi Hospital is fully prepared for the addition of the new Residential and Specialist (PPDS) study program.

"We at Dr. Moewardi Hospital, as a major teaching hospital, fully support the plan to add several study programs, particularly the ophthalmology study program. We hope that the many new PPDS study programs to be opened at the Faculty of Medicine, UNS, will contribute to improving healthcare services at Dr. Moewardi Hospital," she said.
