FK UNS Holds Mental Health Agent Workshop

The Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) held a Mental Health Agent Workshop on Monday (15/09/2025). Held in the FK UNS Auditorium, the event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty, Heads of Study Programs, and representatives of the Faculty's students. The workshop featured two speakers: Berliana Widi Scarvanovi, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist, Head of the UNS Student Counseling Services Sub-Directorate, and Dr. Selfi Handayani, dr., M.Kes., Head of the UNS Medical Center Unit.

The Dean of the FK UNS, Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K), in his remarks, hoped that this workshop would lead to a consensus on the management of students experiencing mental health issues so that they can be handled appropriately and effectively.

"I hope this workshop will result in a consensus on how to manage mental health issues experienced by UNS Faculty of Medicine students, from the earliest level, namely study programs, to more advanced levels such as level I health facilities. This will ensure that these mental health issues can be effectively addressed, as this is all our responsibility," he said.

In her introduction to the UNS Sasmita Jiwa service, Berliana explained that Sasmita Jiwa offers three service programs: promotive, preventive, and curative.

"Our services are not just curative or healing; they also include promotive and preventive services. In the promotive program, we promote the availability of screening and counseling services at UNS. An example of this promotive service is the road show we held some time ago. The road show also included student screenings," she explained.

She believes preventive services, such as screening, are crucial for assessing the mental health of UNS students. If a student is suspected of having a mental disorder requiring further treatment, curative services, such as psychological counseling and academic counseling, will be provided. Sasmita Jiwa can also provide referrals for psychiatric services if the student requires treatment from a psychiatrist.

Dr. Selfi explained in his presentation that the UNS Medical Center focuses on primary care, specifically basic health care. Therefore, cases of mental health disorders will be referred to advanced healthcare facilities.

"Due to our limitations as a primary clinic, we don't have a psychiatrist on staff. If we receive a patient with a severe mental disorder, we will refer them to the UNS Hospital. However, we remain committed to making UNS a mentally health-friendly academic environment for students," she said.

Sasmita Jiwa services are free for all UNS students. Currently, counseling can be done by making a reservation through the form available on the Instagram page @sasmitajiwa.uns. Students will then be contacted by the Sasmita Jiwa team to schedule a counseling session. Counseling can be done online or in-person, on the second floor of the Student Affairs Building and the UNS Medical Center.
