Faculty of Medicine UNS Holds Workshop on Professional Career Development for Doctors

Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) held a Professional Career Development Workshop for Doctors on Thursday, July 24, 2025, in the FK UNS Auditorium. This activity was aimed at FK UNS students to provide new insights into the medical profession beyond being a clinician or academic.

The event, opened by the Dean of FK UNS, Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K), featured two FK UNS alumni as speakers: Dr. Rahmad Asri Ritonga, Deputy Director of Region IX of the Social Security Agency for Health, and Luthfi Azizatunnisa, S.Ked., M.PH., Lecturer at FK-KMK Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event was attended by approximately 100 undergraduate students of Medicine and the Medical Profession program at FK UNS.

In his remarks, Prof. Reviono stated that doctors now fill many professions.

"For example, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health is a doctor and an alumnus of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), or there are regional heads like the regent of Ngawi, who is also a doctor and an alumnus from here. There are also influencers or content creators on health, and we will invite them to speak at events like this in the future," he said.

The first speaker, Dr. Asri, explained that medical students have many career options. She explained that doctors don't have to be clinicians or academics; they can pursue careers in other fields, or even work in multiple fields simultaneously.

"For example, when I work at BPJS Kesehatan, our role in the healthcare sector may not involve directly treating patients, but perhaps the policies we can create or the health system we can provide input into will help patients in need receive assistance from clinicians, have a good insurance system, ensure their finances are not affected, and they can recover. That's part of our contribution to the healthcare sector," he said.

He explained that within the national healthcare system, there are seven subsystems where doctors can contribute.

"For example, in health efforts for both individuals and communities, you could become part of the Health Office or the Ministry of Health. You could also work in research; many require the expertise of doctors for research. Furthermore, you could work in human resources, so you could work within health institutions to manage human resources so that healthcare workers can be properly managed. In financing, this is what we're currently working on, serving with BPJS Kesehatan (Healthcare Social Security Agency), some with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Employment Social Security Agency), and many more," he explained.

The second speaker, Luthfi Azizatunnisa, explained that changing times have also changed the mindset of medical students in determining their goals.

"Perhaps your current dream is to become a clinician or academic, but your future career path may change over time, especially with the changing times. Perhaps more people are now interested in contemporary professions like digital health innovators, content creators, influencers, and perhaps even writers," she said.

For him, the important thing isn't what profession someone pursues, but how that profession can benefit society and contribute to the advancement of healthcare in Indonesia.
