FK UNS Holds Refreshment of Ethics Protocol Review: Strengthening the Capacity of Health Ethics Reviewers and Researchers
The Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) through the Health Research Ethics Committee (KEPK) successfully held the activity "Refreshing the Review of Good and Correct Ethical Protocols" on July 2-3, 2025, at the UNS Inn, Surakarta. This activity aims to strengthen the competence of reviewers and researchers in reviewing and compiling ethical protocols correctly, in accordance with international principles and national standards.
The event was officially opened by the Vice Dean for Academic and Research, FK UNS, Prof. Dr. dr. Eti Poncorini Pamungkasari, M.Pd., who emphasized the importance of this activity in maintaining the quality of research and ensuring protection for research subjects, both humans and experimental animals.
During the two-day training, participants received comprehensive material presentations from competent speakers in their fields. The main speaker Drs. Ondri Dwi Sampurno, M.Sc., Apt. delivered important points related to the concept of 3 ethical principles, 7 standards, and 25 international guidelines, as well as 48 points of research ethics protocol review. He also highlighted the role of the Research Ethics Commission (KEP) as an independent institution that must uphold the principles of accountability and transparency.

The next material was delivered by Dr. Erindra Budi Cahyanto, K.Sep.Ns., M.Kes. regarding the protection of vulnerable subjects in research. The issue of informed consent was discussed in an applicable manner by Dr. Suyatmin, dr., M.Biomed.Sc, who provided field examples in a clinical context.
On the second day, the discussion was expanded to include animal studies, with speakers Prof. Dono Indarto, dr., M.Biotech., ST., Ph.D., AIFM, who explained the ethical principles in pre-clinical research. The next session presented an external resource person from Poltekkes Kemenkes Yogyakarta, Handoko Riwidikdo, S.Kp., who presented technical material on management and review of ethical protocols online through the SIM EPK application.
In closing, dr. Nurhasan Agung Prabowo, Sp.PD., M.Kes., guided participants in direct practice in filling out human subject ethics protocols based on 48 assessment items and using a systematic review form.

This activity was attended by lecturers, researchers, and reviewers of KEPK FK UNS and partner institutions. The training was conducted in a hybrid manner and was equipped with a pre-test and post-test as a form of competency evaluation. Participants who participated in the activity in full were given a certificate of participation.
Through this activity, FK UNS demonstrated its commitment to increasing the capacity of ethical institutions and encouraging the implementation of more responsible and integrated research.
