FK UNS as One of the Erasmus Project Partners: DISCERN DSS Project

In an era of disruption marked by rapid technological developments, digital skills are a crucial aspect, especially in the world of health education. Technological developments in the health sector continue to accelerate, including the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotic surgery, to the Internet of Things (IoT), all of which play a role in increasing the efficiency and quality of medical services. Therefore, medical students and health workers are required to not only understand, but also be able to adapt to digitalization in order to answer the challenges of transformation in the medical world.

In an effort to support the readiness of health workers in the digital era, the Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) participated in a collaborative project entitled Digitally Enhanced Scenario-Based Learning for Digital Soft Skills (DISCERN DSS). This project is funded by the European Commission through the Capacity building in the field of higher education (ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE) scheme. In this DISCERN DSS collaborative project, Universitas Sebelas Maret is part of a consortium with other members, namely Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), and two leading academic institutions in Europe, namely the European Union of Medical Specialists (Belgium) and Karolinska Institutet (Sweden). The coordinator of this consortium is Aristotelio Panepistimio Thessalonikis (Greece).

The collaboration aims to improve the digital skills of medical students through a scenario-based learning approach, an interactive and contextual scenario-based learning method, through capacity building and transfer of knowledge to lecturers and education staff. As an initial step in the implementation of this project, a Kick-off Meeting was held in Brussels, Belgium, on 11-13 February 2025. This meeting is a forum for collaboration partners to align perceptions, set goals, and design project implementation strategies for the next three years (2025-2027).

FK UNS was represented by three delegates, namely Prof. Ari Probandari, dr., MPH, PhD.; Vitri Widyaningsih, dr., MS, PhD.; and Amandha Boy Timor Randita, dr., MMedEd, Sp.K.F.R. In the meeting, a series of digital soft skills development programs were agreed upon which will be integrated into the medical and health education curriculum, including the implementation of the Training of Trainers which is scheduled to take place in Yogyakarta in 2025.

The great hope of this project is to produce Indonesian medical students who not only have clinical competence, but are also skilled in the use of digital technology in the medical world. Thus, the learning environment will be more modern, contextual to real medical problems, and more pedagogically interactive. In addition, digital skills acquired at the undergraduate level are expected to continue to develop at the professional education stage up to the continuing medical education level, making it part of the work habits and a means of self-actualization for future health workers.
