Prof. Tonang Dwi Ardyanto, dr., SpPK, Subsp. IK(K), PhD, FISQua, CHAE Inaugurated as Professor of FK UNS in the Field of Clinical Immunology

The Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has again added one new professor. The addition of this professor follows the inauguration of Prof. Tonang Dwi Ardyanto, dr., SpPK, Subsp. IK(K), PhD, FISQua, CHAE as a professor of the Faculty of Medicine in the field of Clinical Immunology on Monday, (10/02/2025) at the G.P.H Haryo Mataram Auditorium Building, UNS.

Prof. Tonang himself is the 50th professor at the Faculty of Medicine, UNS and the 338th professor at UNS. In his inaugural speech, he took the title Community-Based Clinical Immunology: Experience of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Future Anticipation.

According to Prof. Tonang, the role of Clinical Pathology specialists (Sp.PK) is very large when the Covid-19 pandemic hits the world.

"If we look at the series of handling of Covid patients, then Sp.PK has played a role since the onset of symptoms, then when there is an initial diagnosis, examination during treatment, monitoring until it is stated that they can be allowed to go home," Prof. Tonang explained.

According to him, Sp.PK (Clinical Pathology Specialist) doctors must be able to provide benefits in their knowledge anywhere. "So Sp.PK doesn't have to go anywhere, but their role must be felt everywhere".

Furthermore, it was conveyed that Sp.PK doctors can play a role not only when in the hospital or laboratory but can start their role before the patient is admitted to the hospital and when the patient has returned home from the hospital.

"This will be called Epidemiological Surveillance, which will talk about the basis of clinical immunology that we apply in the process in the community so that Sp.PK can play a complete and comprehensive role," he said.

The role of a Sp.PK doctor is also to provide criticism and suggestions on health issues to the government according to the field of science they master.

"Indeed, acting like this has risks, the risk is that we dare to educate the public, dare to criticize the government, as a result we are bullied from the right and left. But that's okay because it is an academic creed with a key Ambeg Adil Paramarta," he said.

With all the contributions and dedication that have been made by Prof. Tonang so far in the health sector, he has won quite a lot of awards such as the 2022 Achmad Bakrie Award, the 2023 Health Behavior Change Communicator from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and many more awards from various media.

"The lesson from the Covid pandemic is that the most important thing is political readiness, namely effective public communication. At this point, the Covid pandemic experience has proven that a Sp.PK is able to have the provisions and ammunition and competence to play a greater role, not only as a clinician in a hospital, but also in the community," he concluded.

On that occasion, Prof. Hartono reminded the newly inaugurated professors to use their expertise to contribute to sustainable development.

Nowadays, the role of universities is not only to produce quality graduates but also to become centers of research innovation and solutions to the challenges faced by the nation. Prof. Hartono assessed that newly inaugurated professors are assets for universities to carry out their future development vision.

"In this era, universities do not only aim to produce quality but also to become centers of innovation. The expertise of the newly inaugurated professors is a valuable asset to continue to carry out the vision as a state university that contributes to sustainable development. Hopefully this title will strengthen the university's reputation at the national and international levels. Let us together make UNS a campus that continues to provide inspiration and solutions," Prof. Hartono concluded.
