Three UNS Medical Faculty Students Participate in Community Service Activities to Build the Country in East Nusa Tenggara

Three students of the Undergraduate Program in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), namely E.A.Putri Yoga Betaubun (class of 2020), Amira Shabrina Sitarahayu (class of 2021) and Funica Asri Rachmawaty (class of 2021) participated in community service activities for the 3T (Underdeveloped, Frontier, and Outermost) areas in Bari Village, Macang Pacar District, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This community service activity was organized by the non-government organization (NGO) Andre Tjipta Cendekia Foundation or YATC with the title "Sahabat Satu Nusa Edition 5".

Participants who took part in this volunteer activity came from various study programs and various universities in Indonesia. Bari Village, which was the location for this activity, is located in a coastal area with the majority of its population working as fishermen and fish taxi drivers. Bari Village still relies on generators for electricity needs because there is not enough electricity, and the supply of clean water in Bari Village is also inadequate. In addition, there is only 1 Health Center which is a health service facility there which requires a 3-hour sea route to refer patients to the hospital in Labuan Bajo. The limited facilities in Bari Village affect the level of public health there.

In addition to the limited facilities, the level of knowledge about maintaining cleanliness and Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) for children in the village has not been implemented optimally. Therefore, the community service activities carried out by this UNS FK student focused on the implementation of PHBS. There are two main programs regarding the implementation of PHBS, namely the Joint Dental Mission for Extraordinary Smiles (Molaris) program and PHBS Socialization to elementary school children at MIN 2 West Manggarai. In addition, there is also an additional program, namely screening activities for Non-Communicable Diseases (PTM) in the Bari Village community through a free Medical Check Up (MCU). This MCU activity includes physical examinations, anthropometry, blood pressure, GCU checks, free counseling with doctors and provision of free medicine. Another activity carried out in the community service is socialization related to stunting.

The community service program was expected to increase the knowledge of the Bari Village community about the importance of PHBS, the importance of maintaining health, providing free medical treatment for people in need, increasing community knowledge about the prevalence of diseases, and reducing the incidence of stunting in Bari Village. By participating in this community service activity, it is hoped that female students can also apply the knowledge they gain in college and motivate young people to continue to actively build the country.

The Head of Bari Village greatly appreciated the community service activity. He hoped that in the future there will be similar activities in Bari Village because they are very beneficial for the community.

"Not only until here, but I hope we can help each other in the next activities," the Head of Bari Village said.
