Prevent Stunting in Jurangjero Village, KKN Team 311 FK UNS Empowers Local Wisdom as PMT

Students of the Undergraduate Program in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FK UNS) participated in the Thematic Community Service (KKN) "Comprehensive Health Empowerment" in Jurangjero Village, Sragen Regency for the period July - August 2024. The 311 KKN Team held a series of counseling and training for Jurangjero village cadres, including the importance of nutrition, Antenatal Care (ANC) examinations, Exclusive Breastfeeding, Complementary Breastfeeding Foods (MPASI), anthropometric measurements, and training in making Supplementary Food (PMT) with local wisdom to prevent stunting (malnutrition) on Friday (09/08/2024).

Stunting is still a health issue that has not been fully resolved in Indonesia. Based on data from the 2022 Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey, there was an increase in the stunting rate in Sragen Regency from 18.8% in 2021 to 24.3% in 2022. Stunting cases in Jurangjero Village itself reached 3.14% (11 toddlers) in 2023. Through this PMT program, it is hoped that it will be able to improve the nutritional status of toddlers and pregnant women so that stunting cases can be significantly reduced to create a healthy generation. By utilizing local food ingredients such as salak seed flour and bay leaves, this program also introduces affordable and sustainable solutions in dealing with stunting due to anemia.

This counseling and training activity was held to coincide with the routine meeting of Jurangjero village cadres, attended by 24 cadres. The first material on anthropometric measurements was presented by Otniel Liandoro (KKN Student) covering the definition of anthropometry, anthropometric measurement tools, and a demonstration of how to use anthropometric measuring tools. The second material on Exclusive Breastfeeding and MPASI presented by Gusaldi Wachid (KKN Student) covering the types of MPASI, how to breastfeed properly, and how to hold a baby properly. Cadres also received leaflets to minimize forgotten information after the counseling. Furthermore, the third material was The Importance of Nutrition and ANC Examination for Pregnant Women presented by Helena Adelia Prabowo (KKN Student) covering the influence of nutrition during pregnancy on fetal brain growth, the benefits of balanced nutrition, nutrients needed during pregnancy, examples of daily menus according to the rules of my plate, and the promotion of integrated ANC services. Then, the event continued with training in making PMT in the form of "Anti-Anemia Jelly".

The PMT Making Program using local food ingredients is an effort to provide complete one-meal supplementary food from local food ingredients that are easily available in the local area at affordable prices to improve the nutritional status of toddlers and pregnant women. This program is supported by the Village Midwife (in terms of mass gathering) as well as the academic community of FK UNS (in terms of providing flour and facilitator training for trainers). Fikha Dewi Panhesti, A.Md.Keb, as the village midwife said: "Hopefully this counseling and training program can be useful and add new knowledge for village cadres as well as being a place of learning for KKN students to implement the knowledge they have gained in Jurangjero Village".

The main ingredients in this PMT making training are salak seed flour, bay leaf flour, and oranges. This activity was presented by Oktariani Wijayanti, Iffat Rendi Nadiyah, Haura Sahifa Ilmi, Athaya Firda, Ardika Desi, and Hilmy Ismail (KKN Students). Bay leaves were chosen as the PMT ingredient because they are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, and iron. Salak seeds have nutritional content, such as vitamin B2, phosphorus, iron which play an important role in meeting daily Fe needs as an effort to overcome cases of stunting due to anemia. Oranges were also chosen as the main ingredient for this menu because they are rich in vitamin C which can help the absorption of iron (Fe). After the training, the measured flour was given to cadres in each hamlet so that independent PMT making could be practiced.
