Dengue Fever Emergency, FK UNS KKN Team Steps In to “Hunting” Larvae in Kragilan Village

In July to August 2024, students of the Undergraduate Program in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universityas Sebelas Maret (UNS) underwent Community Service (KKN), one of which was in Kragilan Village, Mojosongo District, Boyolali Regency, Central Java. Kragilan Village is in an emergency situation due to Dengue Fever (DBD) cases, where there has been an increase in DBD cases in 3 local Neighborhood Association (RT) areas.

Dengue fever is a disease that is still a serious problem in Indonesia, for example in Kragilan Village which is an endemic area for dengue fever. The cause of dengue fever is basically due to being bitten by the Aedes aegypti mosquito which carries the dengue virus. Endemic areas for dengue fever can be caused by several factors, one of which is the large number of Aedes aegypti mosquito nests that form in endemic areas for dengue fever. Based on data from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) in 2024, there were 88,593 cases of dengue fever with 621 deaths in Indonesia.

In response to the emergency case, the KKN FK UNS Kragilan team held a "DBD Prevention with Jumantik Activities" activity in 3 locations, namely in Sidorejo, Jetis, and Bibisari. Jumantik is an abbreviation of Juru Pemantau Larvae, namely a group that monitors the presence of larvae in the RT environment. The series of activities in general are carried out by checking bathtubs and puddles of water in each resident's house impromptu, then providing education and distributing abate drugs.

This activity prioritizes checking Aedes aegypti mosquito nests and providing abate drugs in residents' homes. Checking mosquito nests is done by visiting each resident's home and checking every corner of the house that has the potential to be a breeding ground for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, such as water tanks, bathroom tubs, jars, used cans, water pools, and other sources of stagnant water.

The results of the inspection found that there were still many sources of larvae inside and outside residents' homes. The drug was given by sprinkling abate drugs in residents' bathrooms which aims to prevent the breeding of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. After that, counseling was carried out regarding the signs and symptoms, prevention methods, and how to eradicate Aedes aegypti mosquito nests using educational media in the form of posters in each resident's home visited.

The activities were carried out on 3 different days. On Saturday (20/07/2024) morning it was carried out at RT Jetis. On Sunday (21/07/2024) afternoon it was carried out at RT Bibisari. Meanwhile, on Monday (22/07/2024) morning the activities were carried out at RT Sidorejo. This program was also accompanied by Jumantik Cadre in its implementation, thus helping the KKN 25 team in interacting with the residents of Kragilan Village.

"Thank you to KKN FK UNS, in this 1 month you have accompanied all the activities in our village, provided education that is useful for us and become a part of us. Hopefully your dedication will be useful for everyone," said Mrs. Arum Susilowati Sri Wulandari as the Jumantik Cadre of Kragilan Village.

With these activities, it is hoped that the program from the UNS Kragilan FK KKN Team can help reduce the incidence of DHF, increase public awareness of DHF, and help implement the Jumantik program that already exists in Kragilan Village.
