Preventing Health Dangers Due to Pesticides, KKN 230 FK UNS Team Invites Farmers in Karanglo Village to Farm Safely

The students of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) who are members of the Community Service Program (KKN) Team 230 conducted socialization on the health dangers caused by pesticides at the regular meeting of the Karanglo Village Farmers Group Association (Gapoktan) on Tuesday (8/8/2023). This activity was held at the Sadakan Lor Hamlet hall, Karanglo Village, Tawangmangu District, Karanganyar Regency.

“Farmers here all still use fertilizers that contain pesticide elements. After we received this socialization, we became aware of the dangers and impacts we were facing on our health. We were also instructed on how to farm safely, as well as what PPE should be used," said Sardi, S.Pd as chairman of the Karanglo Village Gapoktan.

This socialization event opened with a presentation of material regarding the description of health problems among farmers, the dangers of pesticides for health, the importance of maintaining short and long terms health of farmers, and an invitation to farm safely using complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This was then followed by questions and answers, discussions and direct consultations regarding the health of the farmers present.

Farmers and village officials appreciated this activity because farmers in Karanglo village were taught to be more aware of their own health and switch to safe farming methods using standard PPE.

This socialization was carried out by 10 FK UNS KKN students to 25 Gapoktan residents who were representatives of farmer cadets in each hamlet of Karanglo Village. The KKN Team 230 hopes that this outreach will reduce health complaints among farmers and increase life expectancy, especially for farmers in Karanglo Village.
