FK UNS Thematic KKN Team in Ngleses Village Holds Socialization on the Utilization of Village Natural Resources as MPASI to Prevent Stunting

Community Service Program (KKN) is a form of activity carried out by all students to foster a spirit of service and concern for the surrounding community, especially for undergraduate medical students who will benefit when they become doctors later. Bachelor of Medicine students, Faculty of Medicine (FK), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) class of 2020 have undergone Thematic KKN in five districts, one of which is in Ngleses Village, Juwangi District, Boyolali Regency by Team 227.

One of the activities carried out by the Team 227 was a workshop on Complementary Food for Mother's Milk (MPASI) to reduce stunting rates in Ngleses Village. This activity was carried out in one day, namely on Saturday (05/08/2023) at the Ngleses Village Hall and was attended by 20 participants consisting of cadres, pregnant women, and mothers with toddlers. The background for this activity is the existence of potential natural resources (SDA) in Ngleses Village, both those that grow naturally or are planted by local residents which can help prevent stunting so that they can help mothers with middle to lower economic levels to meet their child's MPASI needs.

The MPASI workshop activity began with an evaluation of the Collaborative Nutrition Education and Intensive Stunting Assistance (KEPITING) program from the Juwangi Health Center by Bekti Larasati, S. Tr. Gz., Nutritionist at Juwangi Health Center. He hopes that the CRAB evaluation program which is filled with MPASI workshops by the Team KKN 227 can help the Juwangi Health Center in reducing stunting rates in Ngleses Village.

"The MPASI workshop organized by the KKN Team is very useful for Ngleses Village because it can increase the knowledge of cadres, pregnant women, and mothers with toddlers regarding MPASI so that it can help our program in reducing stunting rates," said the Nutritionist who is usually called Ms. Laras the.
The event continued with filling out the pre-test and delivering material by the Team KKN 227, namely Rajasa Fathahillah and T. Amelia Carolin using powerpoint presentation media, posters, and MPASI recipe books that the Team KKN 227 made themselves. The educational material consisted of the importance of stunting prevention in 1,000 the first day of life, the rules for giving MPASI according to age, the portion of MPASI, nutrition for MP-ASI, and good and correct parenting patterns for giving MP-ASI. The next series of activities was a demonstration on cooking MPASI by KKN 227 team members, Rajasa Fathahillah and T. Amelia Carolin.

The MPASI menu that was demonstrated was cassava porridge filled with meat and vegetables. The Team KKN 227 chose this cassava porridge menu considering the ingredients used are often found in Ngleses Village, including cassava as a substitute for rice, carrots and spinach as vegetables, and tilapia and chicken meat as protein. In addition, the Team KKN 227 has also calculated the expenditure for this cassava porridge menu, which is IDR 7,500 for 3 portions, so this menu is quite affordable for local residents. Apart from cassava porridge, Team 227 also prepared several cooked MPASI menus including soup, team porridge, and egg pudding for the workshop participants to taste and as a reference. The four menus are processed without using seasoning powder or salt sugar so they are safe for toddlers.

The event continued with questions and answers about the material while serving a menu of cassava porridge that had been cooked which was then eaten enthusiastically by the toddlers.

"Actually, the taste of the food is good, sis, it's just a little less tasty. We usually use masako but even without cooking it is delicious and healthier too,” Dwi Handayani, a mother of toddlers who tasted MPASI said.

The last series of these activities was the post-test and distribution of posters related to "reset week" for the silent movement in children as well as recipe books for the cadres. It is hoped that this recipe book can be used as further educational material by the cadres for mothers with other toddlers regarding the variety of MPASI menus using local natural resources to increase their little one's appetite.

"The activity has been going very well, sis mas. We thank you for being given knowledge regarding complementary foods because we have never had this before and this is the first time so it greatly adds to our knowledge,"Fitri Hastuti, a cadre in Ngleses Village said.

By holding this MPASI workshop, it is hoped that mothers with toddlers can understand more about complementary foods and get inspiration regarding the use of local natural resources as nutritious complementary foods at affordable prices so that the stunting rate in Ngleses Village can be reduced.
