Medical Animal Laboratory of FK UNS Holds Basic Training Workshop on Handling Experimental Animals and Model Making of DM
In supporting one of the missions of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), which is to develop knowledge, medical technology and translational research to support public health, the Medical Animal Laboratory (LHC) of the Faculty of Medicine UNS held a Basic Training Workshop on Handling Experimental Animals and Making Diabetes Models Mellitus (DM) on 9-10 August 2023.
The activity, which was attended by around 30 participants from various universities in Indonesia, aims to provide knowledge and understanding about handling (hands on) and making experimental animal models.
On the first day, the activity was filled with theoretical material which presented 3 speakers namely drh. Made Bagus Auriva Mataram, M.Sc presented material on Basic Training in Handling Experimental Animals and Modeling Diabetes Mellitus; dr. Tri Agusti Solikhah, M.Sc with material on Making a Diabetes Mellitus Model; and drh. Khesara Sastrin Prasita N, M.Sc with material on Experimental Animal Research Ethics.

On the second day participants were given the opportunity to directly hands on experimental animals, perform intraperitoneal and intramuscular injections, sonde technique training, retroorbital, tail vein and intracardiac blood sampling, anesthetic techniques, surgery and organ harvesting from experimental animals. In addition, perfusion techniques were also shown in experimental animals.
Dean of FK UNS, Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K) welcomed this activity, according to him activities like this were in line with the vision and mission of FK UNS and supported UNS' steps towards a World Class University.
"UNS with the status of PTNBH is demanded to be more independent in order to achieve a World Class University, to become the pre-eminent in ASEAN, Asia Pacific and the World. This activity is a form of increasing human resources in the Experimental Animal Laboratory of FK UNS as well as to support community service in spreading knowledge about experimental animals," Prof. Reviono said.
One of the participants, Stefany Fernandes from Poltekkes Kemenkes Kupang, was very enthusiastic about participating in this activity “Workshop activities like this are very useful for me, even though I already have the basic knowledge, I feel I need to refresh information regularly so that it is always updated. I also hope that in the future it will be held more regularly with different materials," he said.
drh. Made Bagus Auriva Mataram, M.Sc, one of the speakers at this activity, hopes that participants can gain knowledge that can be used for the development of research with experimental animals at their home institutions.
"I hope that after participating in this workshop, participants can gain new knowledge that can be used to design research that will be carried out. The goal is that after having the design, the participants can get maximum results, both from the sample collection and also the analysis of the data generated from the parameters that have been determined by the researchers," drh. Made Good said.
