Experimental Animal Laboratory of FK UNS Holds Hands On Animal Handling Workshop by Inviting Trainers from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical IPB University
In a series of Creative Leap activities entitled ‘Innovation Program on Neuroscience and Medical Animal Laboratory For Development Of Brain Research Center’ which is part of the 2022 Creative Leap Grant Program, Experimental Animal Laboratory (LHC) Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) held an offline Animal Handling Workshop by inviting Drh. Tri Isyani Tungga Dewi, MSi., Dr. drh. Aulia Andi Mustika, MSi., and Dr. drh. Diah Nugrahani Pristihadi, MSi. from the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Medicine, IPB University, Bogor. The activity, which was carried out offline on 26-27 November 2022, took place in the practicum room of the Anatomy Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, FK UNS, Building F, Floor 1. This activity was attended by participants from the Bachelor of Medicine Study Program, Master of Nutrition, and Doctoral Program in Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sebelas Maret.
The activity which was attended by 35 participants was opened by Dr. Selfi Handayani, dr. MKes, Deputy Dean of Planning, Business Cooperation and Information FK UNS, representing the Dean of FK UNS. This Animal Handling workshop activity provides basic training for researchers who use laboratory animals to be able to properly handle and restrain experimental animals. In this workshop, participants are expected to learn how to administer drugs via the oral (sonde) and parenteral (injection) routes. This workshop also trained participants to conduct sampling to collect blood, urine, fesses, and tissue samples from experimental animals. In this workshop, participants practiced handling mice (Mus musculus), rats (hundred hundred), and rabbits (Cavia cobaya).
This activity is expected to provide basic skills in conducting research using experimental animals, thereby supporting the smooth running of research and graduation of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral study program students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret and in the Universitas Sebelas Maret Postgraduate study program.
