Pharmacology Section of FK UNS Holds International Webinar by Inviting Neuropharmacology Expert from King's College London
As part of the 2022 Creative Leap Grant Program, the Pharmacology Section of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) held a Webinar International Guest Lecture with the theme 'Gabapentinoid-Related Deaths in the United Kingdom' by inviting Dr. Caroline Copeland of King's College London, United Kingdom. The activity that was carried out online using the Zoom platform on Saturday (15/10/22) at 14.00 WIB was expected to support the development of the PIO m-app.
The activity which was attended by 60 participants was opened by Prof. Dr. Reviono., dr., Sp. P (K) as the Dean of FK UNS. Furthermore, Dr. Caroline Copeland as the speaker started the session by explaining the pharmacology of gabapentinoids and their current clinical use. He stated that the issue of gabapentinoid abuse is on the rise in the UK with the increasing mortality rate in the UK related to the discovery of gabapentinoids in the blood.
In addition to gabapentinoids, his research found opioid content in the blood in most of these cases (92%). So, he conveyed the risk of drug interactions between gabapentinoids and opioids. He reminded that efforts are still needed to overcome these problems. He also reminded the importance of the role of pharmacovigilance in monitoring the use of gabapentinoids and or the combination of gabapentinoids with opioids. After delivering the material, the event continued with a question and answer session. Participants seemed enthusiastic in discussing with Dr. Caroline.
This activity was expected to provide deeper insight into pharmacovigilance and drug interactions that can support the development of SMAtDIO. In addition, this activity was also expected to be a lesson for students and clinicians in determining clinical therapy.
