World TB Day in Campus: 'Invest in TB Elimination, Save the Nation'
Tuberculosis (TB) is a dangerous infectious disease caused by a bacterial infection. TB generally attacks the lungs but can also attack other internal organs such as the heart, lymph nodes and others. According to WHO data in 2020 as many as 1.5 million people died from TB disease and this disease became the second deadliest infectious disease after Covid-19.
The fairly rapid spread through droplet contamination plus awareness about healthy living is still low in the community, making this disease contribute to a fairly high mortality rate. According to data from the Ministry of Health in 2021, Indonesia ranks 2nd in the most TB cases in the world.
In commemoration of World TB Day which fell on March 24, 2022, the Pulmonology Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FK UNS) held a World TB Day in Campus seminar with the theme 'Invest to End TB, save Lives'.
The event which took place on Thursday (24/3/2022) was held at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine, UNS and took place in a hybrid manner with offline participants reaching 200 participants with hundreds of other participants via the zoom application.
The event, which was organized by the Pulmonology Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS) of FK UNS, took place at the FK UNS Auditorium and was attended by students, Dharma Wanita Persatuan UNS and the general public.
According to the Director of the UNS Hospital, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si, TB is a classic problem that has existed for a long time but has not yet found the right solution.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the issue of pulmonary tuberculosis is a long-standing problem, even since I was at the puskesmas from 1992 to 1995, pulmonary tuberculosis was still a problem at that time, if I'm not mistaken, Indonesia is ranked fifth and now I have opened the Ministry's website. Health puts Indonesia in the second rank in the world. So now there are around 10 million pulmonary tuberculosis sufferers in the world, two-thirds of which is contributed by 8 countries, the first is India and the second is Indonesia." said Prof. Hartono in his speech represented the Chancellor of UNS.
In the presentation of the material presented by Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K), he said that Tuberculosis has existed for a very long time, there is even a record about this disease written by Hippocrates around 460 BC but until now it is still a problem in the world.
In Indonesia, in 2021 there will be 824,000 new TB patients and 93,000 people will die from this disease. So, we need a good strategy to be able to eliminate this disease. The government also continues to encourage efforts to eradicate this disease by preparing a National TB budget which reaches 7.3 trillion to overcome the problem of TB so that it does not continue to be a health problem in Indonesia.
