English Language Training in the Context of Career Development and Employee Competence in Faculty of Medicine UNS
"FK UNS’ Education Staff must speak English"
Is it Difficult to Learn English?
Many people wonder, is it difficult to learn English? The answer is no. At the beginning of learning English, we will face many obstacles, such as difficulty memorizing and pronouncing vocabulary. However, the more diligently we say it, the more fluent the pronunciation will be.
In the era of globalization, we are required to be able to compete with other nations. However, this will not work well if our foreign language skills are minimal. Of the many languages available, English is a mandatory thing that we must master. English is an international language that is used in various fields. Starting from the fields of education, economics, politics, business, to today's dynamic technology. This is why the ability to speak English is one of the main requirements to compete in the era of globalization. Language does not only act as a means of communication, but can also make it easier for us to adapt to the environment and work. Therefore, it is important for us to learn English. By mastering English, we are one step ahead to achieve our goals. Whether it's for careers, business continuity, adding connections or especially to education staff to serve foreign students or guests. Therefore, it is very important to improve our English’s speaking skill.
The reason why education staff are required to be able to speak English is because:
1. It is easier to keep up with the times
English is known as the world's language of association. More than fifty countries worldwide use English as their vernacular. With English language skills, it will be easier for us to keep up with the times regarding information, issues, the latest news, and services to foreign students or guests.
2. It is easier to understand technologyAre we aware that most people who are not technology-savvy have minimal English proficiency? However, this is often overlooked. In fact, most of the latest technologies, such as smartphones, laptops, televisions, machines, and software, are operated in English.
Imagine, what happens if we don't have basic English skills? We will find it difficult to operate tools that carry advanced technology. It's different if we at least learn English and master English vocabulary.
3. Learning English Increases Self Confidence
The benefit of learning English further is to increase self-confidence. Many people feel inferior and lazy to socialize because of language barriers.
Understandably, in this modern era, many people often insert English vocabulary into everyday social languages. In fact, many Indonesian popular songs also use English vocabulary. In addition, many foreign students or guests communicate using English. At least by understanding English, it will be easier for us to understand what other people want to say so that our confidence will increase indirectly.
4. Bridging Differences
Foreign languages, especially English, are a bridge that connects language differences. With this ability, when we go on vacation or carry out service abroad, we will not find significant obstacles related to language differences, or when foreign students or guests ask us as educational staff, it is hoped that we can help in their services. With English skills, communication will become smoother. The more often we speak in English, the more our abilities are honed and developed.
5. Provisions for Continuing Education
Good English proficiency will also facilitate our educational staff to continue their education. Actually, many people think that studying at home does not require the ability to speak English, but this is not quite right. This is because the ability to speak English is not only a requirement for those of us who wish to continue their education abroad, but also for continuing postgraduate education. Our English language skills will be an added value as well as the main asset for completing education. At postgraduate level, almost all modules use English. If our English skills are lacking, this will hinder our learning activities. Therefore, it is very important to learn English and improve our abilities.
6. Increase Rationality
Not many realize that learning English can also increase rationality. As we know, being rational is very necessary, especially when we want to decide something. Maybe we are wondering, what does foreign language learning have to do with rationality? When we learn a new language, the brain will process the problems we are facing and provide choices regarding decision making using logic, not just following emotions. So, people who master more than one language have a more refined logic so they can be rational regardless of the problem they face.
7. Learning English opens horizons (reach of sight)
Learning English can open our horizons about many things. If before mastering English we had difficulty understanding something, then when we started mastering English, even though it was only at the beginner stage, our horizons were wide open. We will be wiser in looking at life, understanding that every difference is unique so that we appreciate every difference that exists.
8. Increase Concentration
The last benefit of learning English is that it can improve our concentration. This is because those who are good at speaking English can focus more on hearing every spelling that is spoken. The more often they concentrate on listening to each spelling, the automatically their concentration will continue to increase and develop.
A total of 47 education staffs in the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FK UNS) began to take part in English Language Training (Placement class test). The first training was held on Tuesday (26/01/2021) at the FK UNS auditorium building.
This training aimed to further optimize the ability to communicate using English, especially office communication and in services to foreign students or foreign guests who would come or visit FK UNS. Education staff had the potential to strengthen their communication skills in preparing FK UNS to become research universities and have regional competitiveness. This means that we have started to be ready.
With a focus on improving FKUNS services in the regional sector, this first day of training would be continued on the following day with a tiered method. This model was used to measure the English language skills of education staff in daily use in an office environment.
By participating in this training, participants were expected to be able to build self-confidence to speak English. In addition, it’s hoped that participants could encourage other education staff to optimize their English skills. As self-confidence grows, the desire to speak and learn would also get stronger.
